It seems Jota’s transfer to Al-Ittihad, which was once deemed a huge move, is turning into a bit of a nightmare for both the club and the player.

The Portuguese winger chose to move away from Celtic and decided that the best move for him was to move to the Middle East and play for Nuno Espirito Santo at Al-Ittihad.

Since then, the move has become a bit of disaster for the winger and for £25 million, the deal has been something of a bizarre one.

He was left out of Al-Ittihad’s squad for the Saudi Pro League season and is now thought to be considering asking for a contract termination.

The 24-year-old has played only 133 minutes for his new team in the league, starting just once.

And with only eight foreign players allowed per squad under Saudi Pro League rules, the Portuguese had found himself the odd man out at the Jeddah-based club.

What does the report say

According to Saudi outlet Asharq Al-Awsat, Al-Ittihad is launching an investigation into the inner workings of the transfer as they effectively look for who to blame for the £25m deal going south.

The request by Jota for his contract to be terminated was reportedly denied by the Saudi side which is understandable considering the financial outlay.

The club will reportedly hand the winger some financial bonuses if the former Celtic man features in cup competitions with the AFC Champions League being the main cup competition the forward is set to feature in.

The Saudi side, who won the Pro League title last season, have started the season similarly to how they ended the last one. They are top of the table with six wins from seven games with one defeat on their record.
